Legacy strength, future ready

In 1937, Edwin F. Averyt and J. Clifton Judy started Mutual Accident Company in South Carolina with a sales team of mostly women agents without prior business experience and achieved remarkable success. 

1930s

Introduced first insurance (accidental health); renamed company to Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company

1950s

Pioneered payroll deductions for voluntary benefits; first public sector client (state highway patrol) began offering benefits from Colonial Life

1970s

Early adoption of computer technology ahead of most companies

1980s

Began marketing through section 125 (IRS program) and introduced electronic enrollment capabilities nationwide

1990s

Colonial Life becomes a subsidiary of Unum Group

2000s

Added self service and call center enrollments in addition to our in-person enrollment options

2010s

Expanded online benefits administration systems for employers and employees; created a proprietary mobile app for independent agents

2020s

Expanded online enrollment system capabilities with Gathr, a proprietary enrollment and HR technology system for small to medium size businesses; expanded enrollment options with virtual co-browsing
