Colonial Life donates $715,000 and nearly 10,500 hours to community

Contributions support dozens of Midlands organizations

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Jan. 8, 2013) — Colonial Life contributed $715,000 to South Carolina charitable organizations in 2012. The contributions included donations to organizations selected by the company and matching gifts of employee contributions. In addition, employees volunteered nearly 10,500 hours of time to their favorite causes.

“A healthy community helps us have a healthier business and allows our employees to demonstrate their commitment by giving of their time, talents and hard-earned financial resources,” says President and CEO Randy Horn. “It’s an important part of our culture and one of the reasons Colonial Life was recently named one of the best places to work in South Carolina.”

Colonial Life’s corporate social responsibility program focuses on four main areas: education, health and wellness, economic development and cultural arts. The United Way of the Midlands was the largest single beneficiary of the company’s charitable giving last year. It received $421,155 from the company and employees.

Most recently, employees supported special projects to benefit children, families and U.S. soldiers during the holidays. The company’s leadership team took part in a toy drive for Richland County Court-Appointed Special Advocates. Other company-wide projects included Operation Santa Claus for the Carolina Children’s Home; stuffing Christmas stockings, bell-ringing and dressing teddy bears for The Salvation Army; and Operation Write Home and Heroes letters to support troops overseas. In addition, the company responded to Hurricane Sandy, which devastated the Northeast, by contributing supplies and shipping hundreds of hygiene kits to individuals affected by the storm.

The recently released Corporate Social Responsibility 2012 Year in Review publication provides more information about specific organizations Colonial Life and its employees supported, including a complete list of contributions and features on volunteer activities.
