–– Effective today, Ms. Jean Duke will serve as President and Chief Financial
Officer of Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company, a subsidiary of UnumProvident
Corporation (NYSE: UNM).
“Our efforts over the past three months have been to assemble a contemporary
leadership team at Colonial…with the emphasis on team,” said J. Harold Chandler,

Duke is the final step in that process.”
“She brings significant financial and operating experience to her senior management
role,” said Chandler, “and will be an ideal partner to Mike Slade, our recently

Ms. Duke, a certified public accountant, has 13 years of experience at Colonial, including
serving as Vice President of Finance through December, 1998. Since that time, she has been
acting as a consultant for insurance and financial services organizations on operating,
financial and business strategy matters.
This announcement follows the announcement on July 10, 2002, that Mike Slade has assumed
the role of National Managing General Agent. Chandler continues, “With the
appointments of Ms. Duke and Mr. Slade, the senior management team is complete and the
